Dawnstar Australis logos
Sorry to spam so much today guys, but I just remembered I promised to show these to Joe and figured I might as well upload them here while I was at it. This is the series of logos I've designed for one of my two current 'mates rates' clients.

The brief, in essence, is that a local photographer just starting out wants a logo that he can use on his blog, but that can also be used as an effective and readable watermark on his photographs.

I always design in grayscale first (especially for the purposes of watermarking); I'll do a colour version when Daniel has decided which logo he likes. Right now he's debating between #1 and #2, and I'm going to do a quick mashup of certain elements from the two to see if that works (I have a feeling it might not but I've been staring at them too long to be able to tell without actually doing it.) My personal favourite by a longshot is #2; I feel it's more original than the rest and lends itself to watermarking. Not one of these is what I'd called finished, even beyond the colour aspect. For instance, seeing them laid out here, I think I'd be well served moving the 'AUSTRALIS' closer to the 'dawnstar' in every case. Also I still need to fuck with alignment and kerning and shit, but yeah, they're getting there.

Am currently working on another logo for a web designer friend. His business will be called 'Dover Designs' and he wanted something with a pair of sweeping elements between the two words. The awesome thing about this is that I've realised I can use sweepy stylised versions of the 'fancy tag' (I have no idea what you web people call it but it looks like this: } ) to represent a pair of capital 'D's.

In most areas I tend to prefer illustration over graphic design, but logos make me happy as a clam. Incidentally, if anyone reading is in need of a logo, I'm wide open right now.

Ooh, I love the second one two - looks very professional and lends an aura of trust.

I actually made my own logo for my future interior design business - I'd hate for you to see it. Actually that's a lie, I'd love you to critique it. ;]

The byline is; "Greener design and decoration for functioning homes".

I hope you are not offended by any feedback I may give, I'm always hesitant to give feedback because I've had people get really hurt in the past. :\

That said, here goes:

I like the use of bamboo. It's got great calming, environmental and 'homey' connotations. However, I'm not sure about the use of the orangey-red and green in the same logo - while I'm obviously no expert on colour, I feel that a logo promoting harmony in design would be best off using very harmonising colours, perhaps even monochromatic ones (for instance, a couple of shades of green). I also think that the realism of the bamboo is too busy behind the text; it is difficult to read at a glance. I like the fonts you've chosen though, especially the 'earth' one! Very friendly and it echoes the natural curves of bamboo, which is a nice touch.

Hope none of that was too stingy, I'm infamously blunt. D: And from a purely practical standpoint, should you ever decide to get your logo redesigned by someone, I would love to be kept in mind - I've been wanting to do an enviro-themed logo for aaages.

Much love! And now it is 6 and I must flee the office before they kick me out. :D

Oh GOD, don't worry about offending me lovely! Haha, I'm no graphic designer and I'm also pretty famously blunt [more oblivious to tact, but that's another story].

Thankyou so much for letting me know what you think. I know you usually charge for this kind of stuff. ;]

At the moment it's just part of an assignment, but I'm serious about starting my own eco-conscious interiors business in the near-ish future and will definitely need to tweak my logo and other assorted related paraphernalia [ie: business card, letter head designs, etc].

You'll be my #1 choice after seeing your portfolio and Daniel's logo suggestions. You're a talented lady. :]

Woo!! Thank you! And also thank you for not flipping out re feedback - I was pretty sure you wouldn't but I've been surprised by people in the past. And it always made me very sadfaced because I am naturally honest and want to give the best feedback I can give, but also don't want to make people upset. It is a Tricky Issue, I tell you!

I'm definitely not a graphic designer, but I really really love #2. Really great job on all of them!

I like #1 the best because I am a Nuisance. :)

#2 reminds me of a bank or a credit union or something.

Oh you nuisance. GET OUT OF MY JOURNAL. (Haha, kidding). :D
gab From: gab Date: July 29th, 2009 09:07 am (UTC) (Link)
Oh heck yes, #2 is PERFECT for photography and watermarking! Oooh, and so easily transferred to business cards! I am rolling around at how beautiful it is. I am jealous. :)

Also, {} are curly brackets. :)

For serious?? "Curly brackets" is the technical term?? Ahahahaaa, awesome!

I'd have to agree - the second's a nicely clean look, reminiscent of the "available on the App Store" graphics Apple offers. Of the others - and I have a soft spot for the more 3-D looking third and fourth, the latter particularly - I also rather like the fifth, which might be well suited to letterhead duty, or engraved signage.

I like the text in the first, but the logo in the third. :)

Well, up to Daniel of course. Personally I like the 2nd one, but all three below that are appealing as well.
hammond From: hammond Date: July 29th, 2009 11:59 am (UTC) (Link)
I like the second one, and also the last one appeals to me too. It's up to him anyway, but yeah.
tania From: tania Date: July 30th, 2009 12:26 am (UTC) (Link)
I do have a small soft spot for the last too - Daniel has a steampunky ethos (not so much in his photography, but personally) and I aimed to make that last one look a little like a marking you might find on an antique map. :)
radam From: radam Date: July 29th, 2009 01:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
I like 2 the best. It would be better if there wasn't that padding at the bottom though. Plus, the kerning of it is kinda screwy. Maybe I'm drunk.

Incidentally, I AM drunk.
tania From: tania Date: July 29th, 2009 11:23 pm (UTC) (Link)
You drunkard. :D Yeah I haven't even touched the kerning yet, that's one of the final tweaks I'll make - well spotted!

I like em all pretty much!... but #2 does fit on a keychain pretty well!
