Epic Spider-Woman Adventure
OK, so Here Is The Plan. We are definitely hiring a Wicked Camper for the Tassie leg. We'll be buying sleeping bags and layering up for the cold nights. Because of the switch from set accomodation to campervan our ability to range further afield has just increased, so we're probably going to wind up seeing way more STUFF, which is great. So far most of the things I want to see are around Hobart / Port Arthur but I know some of the natural wonders are much further afield, so all in all, the van thing turned out to be good. :)

Onto the entertaining part of this entry. I've been meaning to write this for days, but on Monday I was grumpy with a stomachache, and on Tuesday I was busy. But this HAS to be written down, because it may be one of the most awesome things I've seen all year.

Last Friday night, Joe and I were hangin' at Mark and Rosa's place with JB. Recently Mark, Rosa and JB had bought themselves some full-body skin-tight Zentai lycra suits in various superhero designs. Rosa dubbed her costume "Emo Spidey" because it's the Spider-Man suit in black and silver. Like the real suit, it covers everything for perfect anonymity - she even modified it so the eyes are white; she can see out but nobody can see in.

After playing videogames for a while we decided to walk down to Hungry Jacks for dinner. As we got up to leave I was grabbed by a whim: "Hey Rosa, you should wear the Spidey suit." So she did.

We'd expected little from the exercise - a few grins or comments from the people we passed, and initially that's what we got. What we DIDN'T anticipate was that the local Hungry Jacks was hosting a children's birthday party. Twenty-plus kids were packed into the back room and the adjoining fenced-off playground.

As we ordered in the main section of Hungry Jacks, Rosa remained unnoticed by the mob of kids until a rather tight-lipped mother arrived with her two young boys in tow. The older boy was rambling about wanting to go to the playground... and then he saw Rosa standing at the counter. His mouth and eyes slowly turned into perfect 'o's.

"MUM!" he gasped, "It's SPIDER-GIRL!"

The mother gave Rosa a narrow look that said stay away from my children you obvious pedophile.

"Spider-girl!" the little boys cheered, jumping up and down.

Rosa gave them a little wave and we collected our food and headed for the door. And that must have been the precise moment the first two boys joined the rest of the kids, because suddenly Word Was Out and a flood of children came pouring from the back room screaming, "Spider-Man! SPIDER-MAN!" The costumed pirate who was supposed to be entertaining them looked crestfallen.

We slipped out the door and headed down the side of the restaurant, grinning, and the kids inside all crowded into the playground, crushing up against the fence screaming like fans at a Michael Jackson concert, sticking their little arms through the gaps and waving frantically, all of them shouting for Spider-Man's attention.

"I'm a GIRL!" Rosa protested.

This was lost on the kids, who got more desperate as we walked further from the restaurant. Rosa abandoned her quest for feminine recognition, stopped, turned, and gave them a double-thumbs-up. Twenty-five kids exploded into wild cheering.

We laughed all the way back to Mark and Rosa's place. You know how when you get a bad fright you feel like you've lost years from your life? I'm pretty sure that this experience added years to mine.
