Bartitsu - Suffering From Elation
A Survivor's Tale
How did I never hear about this before???

Bartitsu is a form of martial arts developed in England around 1900. Conan Doyle popularised it when he used it in a Sherlock Holmes story. Incorporating elements from jujitsu, boxing, and bashing people with your walking stick, Bartitsu was primarily practiced by men with large mustaches.

My life is now infinitely richer. Suspecting that Joe might feel the same way, I texted him all of the above. He replied, "Jesus fucking christ, you need a new boyfriend. I'm dedicating my life to that."

For those who would like to make further study of this gentleman's art, here are copies of the hundred-year-old original instructions and illustrations.

I missed the last Prometheus Bound, we were both really tired and just conked out instead of going. I feel guilty because a friend and former coworker was DJing that night and my flatmate was playing in the band! I fail.

I think my dad and I just lol-ed ourselves silly. His response however? "I HAVE A WALKING STICK AND A MACK. I'M SET."

OMG your dad wins. I have neither a walking stick or a mack. I shall have to be a Bartitsu groupie instead. :D

I am almost tempted to write a story just so I can use this. :D

I'm glad to see more people finding out about this semi-lost art form and how excited it can get people. =)

The money quote:

In this way blows can be made so formidable that with an ordinary malacca cane it is possible to sever a man's jugular vein through the collar of his overcoat.

I believe John Steed of _The Avengers_ fame was a practitioner of this martial art :)

My husband often wishes he had been born a century earlier... if I show him this he may actually attempt to make a time machine.

Wicked. I bet my cane, which is basically a heavy metal pipe with a nigh-unbreakable fist-size resin skull at the top, could do some real damage.

Since I'm now using a walking stick, I need to learn this. I want anyone who mistakes me for a toddly target to be sadly surprised.
