Parkas and accomodation - Suffering From Elation
A Survivor's Tale
Parkas and accomodation
To all my Aussie friends - Joe and I are going to Tassie in a couple of weeks, and while we're there, a friend is taking us up to Mt Wellington to see SNOW. I have never seen snow, so I am excited!

However, we have nothing even approaching suitable winter attire. And rather than fork out hundreds of dollars for parkas we'll only use for one week, I was wondering if anyone local has snow attire we might borrow for the trip? We'd just need one mens parka and one ladies parka, and we would return them immediately after the trip unsullied by anything bar the scent of ADVENTURE.

In other news, we still need a place to stay in Tas - my original offer fell through. :( Worse comes to worse we'll go for a youth hostel, but we'd rather couchsurf with a local who knows where all the Cool Stuff To Do is!

In other news, Brisbane's a bit wet. Like, "people's cars floating away" wet. Like, "two-minute bus trip suddenly takes 55 minutes" wet.

Sorry hun - we dumped all our gear back in Norway, when we were in NZ they rented snow gear - possibility?
tania From: tania Date: May 21st, 2009 03:32 am (UTC) (Link)
Definite possibility, but we need warm things for the whole time we're in Tas - not just the day we're actually in snow. Hammy says the mornings are 2 degrees C at the moment. o_o

Get some thermals - or long underwear at least.

Depending on when our Winter clothes arrive might have some. I'll double check with J. but he might be able to lend his big parka.

2 degrees is weak - MAN UP WOMAN! I had hairsicles and eyebrowsicles. Although the colder it is, the more fun it is.

That would be awesome! I seem to have secured some gear for me from Rose, but nothing for Joe yet - Daniel's offered but we'd be cutting it pretty fine, as he doesn't get back from his trip 'til the day before we leave. Keep me posted on your winter clothses?

And I am looking forward to cold and snow. I freaking love the cold, such as it is up here. I look forward to experiencing the "real thing". ;)

I might have some snow jackets and things at home that my mum insisted I take with me. When is your leaving date?
tania From: tania Date: May 21st, 2009 03:30 am (UTC) (Link)
Leaving Friday May 29th. :)
From: dawnstar_au Date: May 21st, 2009 03:42 am (UTC) (Link)
I get back on the 28th - If you want to drop round or something I should have at least something to loan you
tania From: tania Date: May 21st, 2009 05:31 am (UTC) (Link)
Sounds like we'd be cutting it fine - Rose has gear for me and Susan miiight have something for Joe, but if that falls through we'll zip to your place before you leave and take you up on that. Thank you. :)

Np. I do recommend Damart thermal clothing - there's a store near Queen St mall - however they aren't cheap BUT they will last a long time, do the job fantastically and would really stand by you for future cold place and trust me after going to one :)

I've dealt with it enough, especially this last winter that I feel snow to be greatly over-rated. However, you really should experience it at least once. I wish I could loan you some winter jackets that I won't be using for a while, but I don't think they'd get there in time.

Best wishes for a grest trip.

If there is a ski field in the area you can probably rent some, borrowing is cheaper tho :)

We actually don't have any "serious winter clothes" at all, and I take it that even when we're not at the snowfields we're going to need something. I might check out some secondhand places this weekend... but this being sunny QLD, I don't have high hopes!

Well, good luck! If you do get to NZ in winter we can take you to the ski fields here :)

I have a jacket I wore when in Boston and it was below freezing. With a thermal shirt thrown on underneath, it was quite comfy and has a nice big hood. Also have thermals, gloves, and scarves a plenty. =)

Have fun! I want to go next year, around this time.

Ooh that sounds brilliant! If skating doesn't pan out, how about we meet up for coffee or something on another night and we can collect the gear then? Girl you are a LIFESAVER. <3
rosequoll From: rosequoll Date: May 21st, 2009 05:34 am (UTC) (Link)
Sounds good! When do you need to know about skating by? And what night would be good for you, and what items would you like to borrow? =)

I have a big jacket, but I also have nofreetimeverinthehistoryofanythingever but if you can get to my house on Sunday night you can borrow mine, I really just don't have time to be carting it around town or meeting up with people.

Any luck hitting up couchsurfing.com or organising meetups with Mittens (my internet friend)

Looks like I've secured jacketness for me from Rose, and another friend poooosssibly has something for Joe... and ack, no, I've failed at 'stuff to do' organisation for Tas thus far and have not really contacted ANYONE. o_O Must get my ass into gear this coming week.

I can confirm I have a large black coat, and we have some gloves and probably some scarves. Also, all you need is layers. Instead of one jumper, two jumpers. You'll be fine. If you are particularly wussy grab some long underwear. Legs are hard to layer.
