Epic Weekend
Friday afternoon - first session at the gym! 20 minutes jogging on the treadmill (while watching a rerun of Everybody Loves Raymond, ew... bringing my audiobook this afternoon instead), then 15 minutes on the elliptical trainer, then 10 minutes on the bike. Why does gym-sweat smell different to normal-exercise-sweat?

Friday night - party at Aaron's place with work friends. Was AMAZING as always. Up 'til 4am drinking, cracking each other up, singing karaoke and sharing inappropriate secrets. inc_b got some awesome video.

Saturday morning - Woke up still at Aaron's; Joe and I headed home stat and had just enough time to toss on some fresh clothes before meeting up with Damo, who had his brand-new almost-complete Pixar application folio in tow. We went to Southbank and wandered for a while, then sat down in the little rainforest and he showed us his art chops. He blew my mind a little - previously I've seen him draw little other than cute girls; here, he'd expanded his subject matter to encompass different genders, ages, personalities, races, weights and body types. Really, really awesome stuff. You can see the Chris Sanders worship leaking through into his style and it's like candy for the eyes.

I think he's got a real shot at this internship. Damo being Damo, he's freaking out over it and I kept having to calm him down... silly boy. :) He has to post it in by early April and is doing the last of the colouring now in preparation for having it printed. Keep your fingers crossed for him, guys. I hope to see him in America when we visit there early next year.

Apparently Disney (USA) is on a 2D recruitment drive; they're working with a skeleton crew right now. If I didn't love this job so much I'd be tempted, but I'm not sure I want to return to that kind of life... though it DOES fit in with my dream of "see the world by working in various countries for a couple of years at a time". Maybe in a few years. Maybe after Canada. Maybe I'll just do a Damo and go for a Pixar internship one of these days. But not yet. I love it here.

After that fun diversion, the three of us met up with hammond and hit the Museum together. I'd forgotten how much fun that place can be! I raided the gift store and got a couple of Charles Darwin magnetic bookmarks. We whiled away the afternoon there, got sore feet, and left as it closed to grab a late lunch on Hammond's recommendation: Burger Urge at West End. Extremely delicious - I'd never had Sweet Potato fries before!

Hammond headed home to catch up on some sleep in preparation for his night shift at the Elysium. Damo had to head home too, but gave Joe and I a lift into Fortitude Valley, where we set ourselves up at the Elysium and killed a few hours blasting zombies while we waited for Hammond to arrive. He turned up at 11pm, blasted some zombies along with us (seriously, he has the best part-time job ever, he can even drink on the job!) and then I bought him a green apple slurpee, Joe collapsed on the couch (all zombied out) and Hammond and I played a game of pool... which I actually won! I should play sober more often!

We got home at 2am, crashed into bed, and spent most of the next day there resting up. Because we had nothing planned for Sunday we got a bunch of housekeeping and washing out of the way and cleaned up our room, which was a load off. :) Richard did some gardening over the weekend too, so the house has had a bit of a makeover inside and out! We still need to do the mopping though; while vacuuming I discovered an unpleasant surprise Sawyer left us on the polished wood floor of the rarely-used dining nook... silly bulimic cat.

So aside from cleaning, Sunday was all cuddles (some G-rated, some not) and such, and I feel incredibly chilled out. I can't describe why, but lately I've felt as though I'm on Cloud Nine all the time - it's not a high, though there are moments of that; it's more this huge sense of calm and security. I feel like I've relaxed my grip on life this year, and much to my surprise, Life hasn't bolted like a startled horse leaving me flat on my ass. I feel loved, and safe, and full of dreams and plans but without that grinding need to work-work-work at it because as fun as all those plans are, I'm happy with the way my life is right now. And anything more than this is a bonus. Life couldn't get much better.

Actually, I lie - I could have a giant Brush Turkey mount. That would be better.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm painting a ----- (damn NDA) and for once the boss checked it out and LOVED it - no changes whatsoever - and I don't want to lose this groove!

Sounds like another awesome weekend. (Saw some go karts today and thought of you.) I'm glad you're enjoying Life. All work and no play defeats the purpose. :)

Personally, there have been times in the past when I've felt too comfortable with my Life. I was enjoying life, but it wasn't where I wanted to be. I have dreams that are very important for me to accomplish, and which are very difficult difficult for me. I'm extremely driven, but it works for me. :P

Also, you called them "fries" instead of "chips." I know "fries" is Aussie too, but... :O

We use both, but not interchangeably - fries are skinny, chips are fat. Heehee. I used fries above because not only were they skinny, they were referred to as 'fries' on the menu.

It's nice having a balance of contentment and plans. Usually I'm too obsessed with the future; I forget to stop and appreciate what I have right now. I've heard that's the key to true happiness... so far I haven't come across anything that disproves that theory!

I find it very hard to believe Disney is trying to recruit (or having any trouble finding) 2D people here. There are probably dozens or hundreds of good animators out of work currently. My old roomate is there right now as a clean-up person, but she said she'd only there through July.

Now it's _possible_ they're trying to get animators from overseas to get around having to pay union wages. That sure wouldn't surprize me.

Then that may be what's happening - Damo is friends with a guy there who is trying to strongarm him into applying. He's going to, but only as a backup to Pixar.

So there are advantages to being an overseas applicant? That is useful to know. Do you know offhand if they sponsor o/s hires to make it easier for them to get a working visa?

hehe.. ah yeah, thanks for the illumination :} I thought that might be the case, but wasn't totally sure if maybe there was a revival there or not...

Museums - when in NY make sure you go to the Natural History museum. Second only to the Smithsonian in DC.

Lots of other fun museums in NYC as well. All easily accessible via either walking or the subway

Cuddles, G-rated or otherwise, are always awesome. Remind me to tell you about the "cuddle buddy" concept Razz and I have sometime. XD
