Delays - Suffering From Elation
A Survivor's Tale
B'aww... we can't go horse riding this weekend because all the places that offer it are a fair car drive away, and the car is sickly. So I think I'll prod Joe to take the car in for a checkup on Saturday instead.

Aaaand we're going to have to set the America trip back a couple of months, maybe to March 2010, as Joe has to pay off his camera and laptop before he starts saving for it. But this could be good, anyway - the weather will be less severe in March, so less possibility of delayed flights, and airfares will be cheaper because we won't be flying anytime around Christmas. That's quite a few benefits in return for a couple of months worth of patience.

I'm going to have no trouble saving up at all, so I'll probably think about taking another small excursion for myself sometime this year... not sure where yet, but I can't see myself waiting an entire year without travelling somewhere. Ideas? I could always do the Vanuatu thing for the volcanos... poking around I'm finding a number of different approaches, from full-on 5-day hikes with an Australian vulcanologist to more standard 4WD tours with stopoffs in villages, overnight stays and evening walks up to the volcano. The Vanuatu volcanos are near-constantly active but I think there's times of the year when they're at their peak.

If I do this - or even if I do something else - I'll probably aim to make it a week-long trip. Would like to rustle up a travelling buddy... I'm tired of travelling alone.

New Zealand North Island - check out the Tongereiro Crossing walk. Apparently it is one of the "most spectacular walks in the world" - mountains, fields, crater lake and you get to see/climb up a bit Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings. It's apparently pretty spectacular all year round. We went in May so it was just starting to snap freeze but I hear it is amazing in summer to. :)

Plus, it's only a couple of hours from Rotorua and if you haven't been there already, I cannot emphasise ENOUGH on how amazingly awesome it is with all the geothermal activity there - SPECTACULAR!!! Just a thought :)

New Zealand, eh? I've always wanted to go... And I suspect it offers a bigger variety of Stuff To Do than Vanuatu... and the airfares are reasonable. Great idea, thank you!

Knowing you, the volcanoes will be awesome.

It's probably impractical, but the only other input I could offer is: What about two U.S. trips? A short one just to see Yellowstone and then the longer one for all the rest of the U.S. That way you could make sure you get passports and stuff in order and use it as reconnaissance to see if there should be any more contingency plans for the U.S. Okay, so airfare is $2,000 USD round-trip, BUUUUTTTT...

Have fun with the volcanoes.

Aw, I would - I actually thought about it - but the US trip is a special thing for Joe and I; it'll be the first trip we've taken together. So we really want to both set foot on US soil for the first time as a team.

A friend in Sydney has made me a good offer though - he wants to know if Joe and I would like to accompany he and his partner to the snow at one of the Aussie ski resorts (Thredbo) in the middle of the year. Having never seen snow, I am a definite YES for that! Plus, the money we save on airfares can be used to have a more awesome holiday. :)

Ya know...March is a far better time to travel in the US, so maybe that's not a bad thing.

That's how I'm consoling myself. Less snow, better conditions, cheaper airfares - and apparently that's when Mardi Gras is on in New Orleans, which could be pretty freaking cool. :D

March, eh? *makes notes*

...oh my gosh. I just realized.

Mardi Gras falls at the end of March next year.

...talk about getting real exposure to New Orleans. o_o

I wanted to offer to come to NZ with you, but the Fuzzy made wah wah noises about being left at home all alone and suggested we should invite you to come to the snow (ie. Thredbo) with us this winter instead.

...hey, that's an AWESOME idea! I think Joe would be OK coming up with the cash for that one too. :) :) How solid are your plans at the moment?
rahball From: rahball Date: January 30th, 2009 09:09 am (UTC) (Link)
No solid bookings or anything so far, just a general intention to go. The Fuzzy says we'd be staying at the YHA in Thredbo.

On the upside, if you do come here in March, that'll mean you'll be just in time for your Godson's 2nd birthday. :D
