First up - the BBC has made two new Red Dwarf specials. In one of them, the guys finally make it back to earth. As gypsyjr said, "Dear powers that be: Please make this not suck."

In other news, Joe and I recently hunted down some Miracle Berry pills on eBay. Miracle Berries are these little fruits that grow in Far North QLD. When you eat one, everything you eat for an hour or so afterwards takes on a sweet flavour. This is not a subtle effect: the entire taste experience of most foods is drastically changed. Beer tastes like lemonade. And speaking of lemonade, people who've had Miracle Berries will happily nom down an actual lemon - it tastes like sherbet. Previously bland vegetables become an adventure.

The effect of Miracle Berry comes from a coating it leaves on the tongue. It is NOT a psychoactive drug in any sense. Have you ever brushed your teeth with peppermint toothpaste, then tried to drink orange juice only to find that the normally sweet deliciousness of the juice has been transformed by the peppermint? It's like that effect, only awesome instead of horrendous.

Joe's parents have advised us NOT to try eating meat while under the influence of Miracle Berry.

Anyway. We're going to hold a taste party, probably this Sunday. We'll buy an assortment of foods, pass out the Miracle Berry tablets, and commence experimentation. It is going to be AWESOME.

I'm thinking about organising a bit of horse riding for this Saturday. I've never been, and I'd love to learn. :) After this we'll probably have to ramp back the more costly of our mini-adventures in favour of saving for the Big Adventure at the end of the year though - especially with the additional cost of the car breaking down.

Having just checked on the prices, though, horse riding is cheaper than I'd expected!

I heard about Red Dward this morning. I don't think there's much of a chance they could smeg it up worse than the last bunch of episodes. IMO they had a great chance to reset the series, maybe get younger actors and a less-lethargic production team. Rimmer was dead, Red Dwarf was vacant, the convicts were removed, and the other Dwarfers were the only ones left alive ~3,000,010 years into the future.

Have fun with the miracle berries!

Yeah, the last couple of seasons were... eh. Everyone loves the middle part of the whole series - seasons 3, 4, etc - but I'm actually really partial to the early episodes. Grey uniforms, grey sets, NO special effects, almost everything taking place on the ship... basically, the whole thing was COMPLETELY reliant on the clever dialogue and character interaction, and because of that, the writing was so, so strong! I felt that when the show delved into more special effects and stuff it really weakened the cleverness at the core of it.

The seasons with Kryten were awesome; he really added to the show. But I'm with you, the early episodes with Lister being a space bum were terrific. Lister as a space hero were pretty cool too. But in 7 and 8 they turned him into a space idiot. To make work (and car trips) pass faster I recorded the audio of the episodes and burned them to MP3 CDs. (Let me know if you want copies.) I like to listen to the earlier episodes for the clever dialogue. My favorite episode is 1-2 Future Echoes, partially for that reason.

Kiefer and I actually bought some Miracle Berry tabs ourselves, and were going to have a party but were so underwhelmed we never bothered! Maybe our pills lacked potency, I dunno.
We found that regular veggies still tasted normal, wine wasn't terribly improved, and while Guiness may have been helped a bit, it wasn't terribly dramatic. Already sweet things like strawberries were somewhat improved, but it wasn't overwhelming.
Lemons/limes/sour candies DID taste extremely sweet, but our mouths and throats still reacted to the sour and the acid, so that cut down on the enjoyment a little bit after a while.
It was fun and I totally reccomend trying the stuff, but I'm interested to hear whether you have a more intense experience!

Huh, maybe we should try dissolving a higher dose on our tongues? Two pills each instead of one? I wonder if perhaps the pills just lack the potency of the original berries? Joe tasted fresh berries when he lived up north so he'll be able to tell. Thanks for the tip!

Oh, for a great horse riding adventure (if they're still there), check North Stradbroke island. There used to be a fantastic ride through there with a whacky old guy who was more beard than man, from memory. Good safe start for a beginner too, lots and lots of sand.

It's been 11 or 12 years since I was in the area, though. It may not be there anymore, which would make me very sad. :(

Google is NOT my friend today - I can't find any reference to them. :( B'aww, and I love wacky old dudes comprised entirely of Beard. My favourite example of these was Jonathan, who runs a perfumery here in Bris, and dyes his hair and beard bright blue. <3

I feel so girly! I will have to wear my hair in ponytails that day.

I've always been curious about miracle berries. Perhaps some day I shall taste of their forbidden sweetness!

Okay, so those berries sound amazing. I have to check - there's gotta be some place in NYC that has them.

And have fun riding! I miss it so much.

Oh my god. Total Red dwarf fan here. I am actually watching series 2 RIGHT NOW :)
Was very dissapointed in the last three series though. I am guessing anything else they make will follow that "comedic" route.

Horse riding! I have never been :) Wanted to learn though... Enjoy!

eeee horse riding - very posh for you :P

Although I only just found out my old riding school lost a horse during the huge storm when it was trapped by a down powerline :(

Oh noes... :(

Posh my arse. If I take up... whatsitcalled? Dressage? The one where the point is to look all fancy and basically make the horse dance like a poodle? THEN you can call me posh. :D I just want to learn how to ride. And then I want to learn how to ride FAST. Muahahaa.

I hope it doesn't matter too much that I'm a late starter. D:
