Oh the pain - Suffering From Elation
A Survivor's Tale
Oh the pain
Friday night cocktails was everything I dreamed of and more. We all laughed so hard we nearly died. Joey has some priceless photos.

After that, we spent pretty much the entire weekend being couch potatos, which was nice - we haven't had an obligation-free weekend in a LONG time and we had the house to ourselves. It was a much-needed break. Unfortunately, all the lying around on a less-than-ideal couch has made my neck lock up all down the left side, which is where "THE PAIN" in the header above comes in. D: I have to turn my entire body every time I want to look left! Nurofen time, methinks...

I've started exercising again. Fell off the bandwagon in the past few weeks. Decided to figure out why that happened and my conclusions are as followed:

1. I'm a real wimp about the heat. Brisk hour-plus-long walks in the morning and afternoon are great when your breath is pluming in the winter air and your actions are snugly warming you against the cold, but not so great when you're sweating buckets in the middle of summer.

2. I overreached. The walk from home to work is an hour, minimum - that's if I jog part of the way. To do that twice every day was taking two hours out of my time each day, PLUS the time it took to shower and change after each walk, PLUS the amount of extra laundry it was generating... it was taking so much time and energy when I was doing it constantly, day and night, that I had no room to think about anything else. I noticed that I let the walking slide right when I began to focus on writing that short story.

So I'm taking another crack at it, this time adjusting for the elements that caused failure last time. Obviously I can't do squat about the heat so I'm just going to have to man up. Happily, the thinner I get, the less the heat affects me, so that's something to work towards.

The time aspect is something I CAN work on. From now on I'll just do half the walk: from home down Marshall Lane to Moggil Road, where I'll catch a bus the rest of the way. It's roughly a 25 minute walk, though if I begin to jog I can easily get it down to 15. Doing that twice a day will be sufficient exercise for now, and will slowly cut my weight back to a level where I can begin to do more, faster, by which time the weather will be starting to cool and, more to the point, we're likely to be moving to Caloundra where I can swim in the summer and walk in the winter anyway.

I'm about to do a fifth draft of the story courtesy of some excellent feedback from Rachel and Susan. Thanks girls! I'm rapidly running out of time, so by necessity, this rewrite will be the last. I'm sort of hooked now, so I think I'll start writing another story when I'm done, maybe look for a different competition or a magazine or something to give me a target to work towards.

Rewriting is most addictive.

Also completely understand about the walking. The winter cold hates me. And I most definitely am only walking only for 40 min in the mornings.

I know, right? Who knew that you could actually polish a turd into something vaguely golden in colour?? ;)

I have no work to do today. This makes me happy. ;)

I have no work either, but have new work mate?

Apparently I have to buy him a 'welcome to the strategic partnership team' card and then fake my boss's signature.

Oh yes, I got the pain only a few weeks ago I was bending down to pick up some change off the ground after buying a coke and my neck just locked. I was sent home from work and proceeded to spend the day and then the weekend in a great deal of pain. Strong pain killers and a heat pack are my only suggestions. If you have to be in a car at anytime brace yourself as hard as you can against the back of the chair x_x try not to get in a car with friends or family who drive like maniacs. x)

But I'd be tempted to catch a lift by clinging to the back of a cargo ship! That's not good excercise, it's just suicidal. :D

I see your icon and I raise it.

Why catch a cargo ship when you can ride a shipfish?!

the heat is not a good thing. it is hideous. it makes baby jesus cry.
what i try and do is walk home, rather than to work. that way, i have a lovely way to unwind slowly at the end of the day, and get some exercise, without having to be slapped in the face with exercise too early.
