Dark Skies
Last night marked the third violent storm to hit Brisbane this week. They're predicting another - possibly tonight, quite likely Saturday night. There's been a lot of damage. Approximately 80 houses were damaged so badly that they're write-offs. The Channel 7 studio flooded. A tree crushed the roof of the Ferny Grove police station. One of my coworkers lost power at home for two days; one of my friends saw the lower level of her home flooded with inches of water.

The media is doing a little fearmongering (what's new) but it helps to remember that this sort of violent weather is completely normal. Queensland summers = steamy days and apocalyptic nights. It's the LACK of storms for the past few years which has been weird and abnormal.

Tropical storms were always one of the things I loved best about Queensland, and I have to admit, despite the damage so many people have taken, I'm a little bit glad to see them back.

Agreed. The night after the first stom my parents called me after the caught the late news (they live in vic) as the interstate media made it sound like Brisbane had been hit by a tactical nuke.

Fortunatley as we lived in Townsville for some time they knew this was likely to be complete shit. Hell this storm doesn't even begin to approach a category one cyclone and honestly most of the damaged houses are that we due to poor building standards.

Building standards in North Queensland mean that the only one your roof leaves is if the rest of the house goes with it.

I've had the opportunity several times within the last day to deliver my standard rant about how the weather was much kewler when I first arrived in Brisbane, and that it'd be been entirely out-of-character and meek for the last several years. I'm right with you in being pleased to see the evening lightning shows back.

Admittedly, a few more extended power outages might dampen my enthusiasm, but we'll see....

This is where fully-charged laptops come in handy! In all seriousness, though, I'm glad I'm not alone in my sentimental love of mother nature's regular summer PMS sessions. Queensland summer weather has personality, it's part of what makes this place great! And without it, Queensland had started to feel sort of empty.

Also, it means that talking about the weather with strangers is suddenly a whole lot less torturous. ;)

"It's the LACK of storms for the past few years that was weird and abnormal. .."

THANK YOU!!!

I have been trying to tell people this for the last week and they are all "Oh no! It's never ever been THIS bad!" BOLLOCKS!!! It's just now the weather is swinging back to normal, that's all.

That said, I love the storms, even though they terrify me. They have however, caused $1500 of damage on the new house so far by flooding the bottom level and wrecking the carpet in the rumpus room - hooray insurance :D

Hooray storms!

I remember when I was a kid, the biggest one of the season always seemed to be a couple of days before Christmas. If it follows the old weather pattern, our best storms are yet to come - hooray!!! *dances*

We live just south of the Queensland border so we pick up these storms and I just adore them - I live on a beautiful ridge from which we can see the clouds rolling across the valley towards us. We often sit out on the deck on summer evenings to watch the lightning; it's one of my favourite past times after a hot sticky day.

And gorgeous photos!

I actually walked out and sat on the steps to watch all this much ado about nothing - I never shut my computer off - a few times when I was on the phone I said "Fuck, that was a little close" - it is only a bit of rain. It's about time we had a wet season down here...

I have to keep remembering that the last time we had "proper summer weather" was back in the late 80's and I have a lot of friends that just havent experienced it before

Oooh, storm photos! I am so jealous...we don't get good storms in Seattle. I got one shot in the past three years of lightning, and it took me three hours of photos to get that one shot ('tho it was a good one).

You got some great catches! The clouds funneling toward the city and the one with the multiple strikes on the city...VERY nice.

I keep my photos at singingpixel, although I haven't added anything in a long while as I was sick through most of autumn and am now into sulking for the winter.
