Happy Monday, everyone! - Suffering From Elation
A Survivor's Tale
Happy Monday, everyone!
Header is laced with sarcasm. Actually, it sort of isn't... I'm very cheerful this morning. I spent most of the weekend up in Caloundra with Joey, my dad, Jeanne, Chris and Jess and my new nephew Kyson. He's amazing. He stopped crying when I held him! But then he started again later so it was probably a coincidence rather than him thinking I'm awesome.

That's okay though, because I have years of spoiling him rotten to come, so that he thinks I'm the best auntie ever (haha... technically I'm his ONLY auntie, and his sole uncle is only six years old...) and learns to loathe his parents while holding me up as an example of awesomeness. Take THAT, Chris! ;) But seriously, yeah... being an auntie is going to rock so hard.

Caloundra is amazing too. I'd forgotten just how much. Now I know where I want to end up again and aaargh, it's infuriating. Work keeps me here. Even Joe fell a little in love with the place. THAT surprised me, in a good way.

He and I walked on the beach. We watched ships come in and saw nightfall from the cliffs of Kings Beach Headlands. We investigated rock pools and walked along the boardwalk at night. We found a couple of honestly freaky, mysterious rocks that became luminiscent after our torches shone on them; I can honestly say I've never seen anything like that in all the years I lived in Caloundra, and I'd have grabbed a sample to bring home, but both stones were lodged hard under other massive boulders. (If anyone reading knows of any reason why a slightly rounded, flat-on-the-bottom stone would have a pale layer on it that absorbs and slowly releases light, please tell me, it's driving me mad. And no, we didn't have a camera on us for once. We're going back sometime in November to visit the folks again and investigate those stones...)

My little brother's apartment is really nice; he's a two-minute walk from the beach and can see it from his balcony. Lovely! The rent up there is SO cheap. Ugh, I've got to stop thinking about this; there are lots of things I need to do here in this icky, people-packed city before I can move on to something better. And Kenmore IS one of the nicer parts of Brisbane. It's no Caloundra... it doesn't have those broad, empty streets or that constant brisk ocean breeze that fills you with energy. It doesn't have that spaciousness that reaches into your head and prises your skull wide open to the world 'til the light and air pours into all the darkest parts of your mind... but it's undeniably nice.

I slept well last night under a whirring fan and had brilliant, vivid dreams.

Man, I'm tempted to ask about the nudity ones, but I don't want to seem like a perv. XD

I'm just an innocent* little nudist, honest!

*For certain values of "innocent," at least.
tania From: tania Date: October 6th, 2008 03:27 am (UTC) (Link)
Aw g'wan, you're such a perv. Which naked ones? I've been skinny-dipping in the dam at Joe's parents' place, and I rocked up to school once as a kid with nothing under my jumper (very embarrassing when the teacher made me take it off for sports) and once or twice sans-underwear, for practical reasons. Never when I was wearing a skirt, obviously. 9_9
stokerbramwell From: stokerbramwell Date: October 6th, 2008 03:39 am (UTC) (Link)
I was curious about number one. XD Wondering what the circumstances around that were, and always curious if it had anything to do with a pic you posted a looooong time ago that you said was partially cropped.

...and wait, were you in a locker room when the teacher did that, or what? o.o
tania From: tania Date: October 6th, 2008 03:43 am (UTC) (Link)
Oh, nude photos? Gosh, there's millions of me. Actually one of my favourite photos of myself, from when I was at my slimmest, is a nude shot. Pity, 'cos I'd love to show people how amazing my body was right then! ;) (I could probably get THAT thin again but I don't want to; I had to torture myself physically and psychologically to look like that, and no amount of slimness is worth my happiness.)

But yeah, Joe's a keen photographer and one of the things he likes photographing is me, in all my glory, heh. I'd estimate there's at least sixty nude photos of me around, mostly on his computer, some including him, some including Liz.
stokerbramwell From: stokerbramwell Date: October 6th, 2008 03:47 am (UTC) (Link)
Wow, it's good to know you're so confident! I've always thought that everyone should pose for nudes sometimes. Not only is it fun to see people as they really are, with no artificial additives, but it's an interesting way of being able to look at yourself in the past to see how much you've changed.

Heh, I'd offer to show you some of me and Razz, but I've lost most of the best ones, and we're not what you'd call in perfect shape right now. XD Still, ain't stopping us from enjoying being at ease in our birthday suits.
tania From: tania Date: October 6th, 2008 04:05 am (UTC) (Link)
Same with Joe and I, I swear, he'd get around naked constantly if it was socially acceptable. He does at home, only wearing a towel or sarong outside the room for our poor flatmate's sake. I can safely assume that on the day Joe and I finally get a place that is completely our own, he will come home to shed his clothing daily the moment he steps through the door, and his naked bum will be all I ever see at home. Lucky for him it's a nice bum. ;)
stokerbramwell From: stokerbramwell Date: October 6th, 2008 04:10 am (UTC) (Link)
Joe sounds like a man after my own heart.

Oh, and just for the record, Razz and I aren't actually ashamed of ourselves...we just realize that we're not exactly what people think of as the "ideal" body shapes, and try to respect that not everybody wants to see our flabby, pale nerdiness. XD

You two ought to look into some sort of nudist group, or find friends who are cool with it nearby. There's nothing quite as relaxing as relaxing in the buff...I wish we had more freedom to do that around here.
tania From: tania Date: October 6th, 2008 04:13 am (UTC) (Link)
Aw, I'd probably be kicked out of any nudist group for my love of panties and bras. They're cute and they protect my delicate bits. ;)
stokerbramwell From: stokerbramwell Date: October 6th, 2008 04:16 am (UTC) (Link)
Well, most of them are clothing optional, not necessarily clothing free. ;D They might be alright with it, you never know!

Shame we aren't closer, we'd love to hang out. XD
tania From: tania Date: October 6th, 2008 03:48 am (UTC) (Link)
I've had too much caffeine today, I keep forgetting to answer bits of people's questions.

The cropped photo was probably cropped because of nudity, yeah. ^_^ And the jumper incident was out in the sports field; I was only six and too shy to tell the teacher I was not wearing a shirt, so I just obediently took off the jumper. The surprised teacher made me put it back on again of course. ;)
stokerbramwell From: stokerbramwell Date: October 6th, 2008 03:51 am (UTC) (Link)
Heh, I figured that was the case with the pic, but curiosity killed the bat as they (don't) say.

How old were you when that happened? I mean, if you were, like, ten or so, I don't imagine the teacher would have had THAT much reason to be shocked...unless you were an early bloomer.
tania From: tania Date: October 6th, 2008 04:02 am (UTC) (Link)
Naw, I was only about five or six for memory - the teacher wasn't shocked so much as surprised, and got me to put it back on in part, I suspect, because even back in the eighties teachers had to be very careful about anything that could be seen as remotely inappropriate. *shrugs*
stokerbramwell From: stokerbramwell Date: October 6th, 2008 04:10 am (UTC) (Link)
Ahh, okay, that makes sense.

It's a shame we live in a world that HAS to be that paranoid. >.>

I'll throw the glowing rock question at my dad. He's a geologist and will probably be quit happy to have a go at this.
From: dawnstar_au Date: October 6th, 2008 02:30 am (UTC) (Link)
OK... it turns out that a number of quartz rocks in Australia display a property called "optically stimulated luminescence" or OSL which does exactly what you describe. Becomes "switched on" by a light source present and will hang around for a period. That's pretty neat.

OK, that is... amazingly awesome!

I'll get a photo next time I'm up at Caloundra and link you to it so you can show your dad, to confirm that these rocks are the ones he's referring to. Their light-retaining properties were truly amazing!
From: dawnstar_au Date: October 6th, 2008 03:37 am (UTC) (Link)
Apparently it's not so much light retaining but kickstarting a very mild radioactive reaction. Same method is used to locate sources of uranium.

Photos would be neat - would make Dad's day.
justascream From: justascream Date: October 6th, 2008 02:43 am (UTC) (Link)
Because you obviously WANT someone to ask: fist-fight, "thrown something strange", GO.

(I can so totally tell you snagged this thing off me. I had to insert the dashes to prevent a total clutter-hater freakout. lol)

Oh and, more than one test? Or one test in particular?
tania From: tania Date: October 6th, 2008 03:32 am (UTC) (Link)
OK, for the fist-fight thing I wanted to put 'yes and no', because I've had the girly equivalent. I was in high school, year 9, when this happened... I used to have really horrid periods with days and days of agonising, almost debilitating pain. Walking along after homeroom, wearing a heavy bag, I was in pain and feeling sorry for myself when this bigmouthed new girl in the grade down started pulling on the back of my bag. Whenever I turned to glare at her she'd just smirk, and when I kept walking, she'd do it again. Each tug sent a bolt of pain through my back and midsection.

I yelled at her, but the standard pattern continued - proclamation of innocence with a knowing grin, and more pulling on the bag. Finally, I lost my temper (very easy for me at that age), turned around and slapped her hard across the face. She instantly slapped me back twice as hard, almost knocking me to my feet. This so shocked me that I just walked quickly away, knowing full well there was no way I could slap hard enough to up the ante further. :P

As it turns out, she was the state karate champion, so I was probably lucky. 9_9

"Thrown something strange" refers to the jellyfish fights my brother and I used to have on Golden Beach. SPLUT.
tania From: tania Date: October 6th, 2008 03:46 am (UTC) (Link)
Oh, and the test thing? On the scale of 'cheating' it wasn't, you know, copying off anyone else... I would never have done that; my classmates were generally more likely to copy off me. ;) Nah, it was that I was always rusty with math, and with my memory I'd often forget the basic formulas that we were expected to apply to problems in exams. So sometimes I'd write the formula down on my wrist, or at least a piece of it, so I could reference it during the test.

Technically it was a Very Naughty Thing To Do, but even at that age I knew I was heading for a career in the creative industries. I deeply resented a curriculum which forced us to do things like trigonometry long after we'd mastered the sort of basic math we'd need to get by. I saw those years of 'advanced math' as a waste of my time, and the moment I was able to swing the school system in order to get out of it, I dropped the subject altogether.

Heehee... yes. I ran away from home when I was about five... to the paddock at the end of the street. I sat there for about an hour before I realised that being homeless was really, really boring, so I went back.

I ran away once more when I was fourteen or so, after some fight with my parents (I don't even remember what it was about). This time it was at night and I hung around out the front of a school for a couple of hours until my parents found me. I thought it was very sweet that they went looking. If they'd held out another hour or so I'd have gotten bored and come home. ;D

You'd be surprised how much less strict parents suddenly get if they think there's the slightest chance your life is in danger. :)

BTW, when you finally pick someone to slap, make sure it's not the state karate champ, 'kay?

I'm always amused by the "stolen someones heart" one. All I can visualise is someone legging it from the transplant ward of hospital screaming "It's mine! Mine I say! Bwhahahahaha!"
