They took mah bukkit!! - Suffering From Elation
A Survivor's Tale
They took mah bukkit!!
Hello Queenslanders. Has anyone been wrestling snail-paced internet this morning? Mobile phone issues?

Rumor has it that someone broke a cable between New South Wales and Queensland, and now Queensland has the mobile phone network and internet of the 1990's.

Slow clap, Australia.

This makes the Simpsons episode that featured the Australian prime minister hanging out in a floating innertube on a dam slightly less amusing.

[EDIT] Apparently us poor sods with Optus have also lost our home phones, fun! Now I'm no longer sure I want to stick with Optus for my services 'til I leave for Canada, and I can't say I wasn't warned. :P It's a moot point, though, as I'm currently leeching all my internet off whoever work is with.

As much as I'm loathe to link to a Courier Mail story, here 'tis: http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,24022417-952,00.html

[EDIT 2] Aaaand we're back. Outage went for around 6 hours. One consequence I didn't think about 'til shortly before lunch was that all the EFTPOS machines were down too - cash only! Another consequence raised by someone else was that all phone-in alarm systems would have been down; if you wanted to rob a bank, you missed the perfect window today. An interesting addendum is that there's some sort of electricity strike being tossed about for Wed-Fri; if the phones had stayed down we would have been without phones, internet, most banking services, and potentially electricity for a few days. It would have been a really interesting opportunity to study how people get by without those things, and a little wakeup call about how reliant we've become on technology (I address myself from this soapbox too; let's not forget I'm using the internet to communicate this idea!)

I haven;t noticed anything, but it may be limited to some ISPs / providers. I am with Internode :)

Apparently it's only Optus mobile, optus internet and a few other ISPs.

Yep, Optus lost both their Inland and Coastal routes this morning. Rumor is Fibre break on one and a hardware failure on the other. iinet is currently stuffed, but we will be fixing that shortly.

Internode use nextgen thankfully

Never again for me. I was 19 and naive when they ripped me off to the tune of $500, back when their contracts were a lot sneakier.

Telstra sucks! Optus isn't much better!!

That would explain why I haven't been able to jack squat with the internet all morning. I (foolishly) assumed it was something my end, and have spent the morning reinstalling the modem (or attempting to) and just got back on, thinking I had fixed it. The reasons I didn't call Optus is that I am sick with the flu (I didn't want to sit on the phone for ages) and this kinda thing happens every 6 months or so, where I have to do a reinstall (I have mentioned it to Optus, who shrug and claim it may just be a glitch with my computer, even though it has happened to two different computers on the same account...).
The shitty thing is, now I am finally online I am exhausted and need a nap :(

Weird, I was having drama last night with no internet signal in my room but my internet seems to be fine now. :/

Yeah, apparently they fixed it shortly after 12... some phones are still down though. EFTPOS was down when I went to grab lunch. It was an interesting reminder of how interconnected a lot of our tech is...

Meh, it happens. All ISPs and telecommunications stuff are bound to go down at some point. It's what we risk with technology.

Oh hey - I tried to send you an SMS via a freebie online thing but it just occured to me you might not get it 'cos of the outage, so I'll post it here just in case too: Joe and I can't make it tonight, we be broke.

That's fine :) Diz isn't coming now either for similar reasons.

Our entire PDA connection is through Optus so most of the day I couldn't get any messages from people that had MFD troubles. Yay! So much fun.

I was wondering why my iPhone lost its connection on the bus in to work this morning. I blamed it on crappy reception and ignored it.
