Graphic Designer opportunity
Locals - my workplace is looking for a graphic designer. Located in Taringa, it's an awesome place to work, and they treat their staff very well. There's no official advertisment out yet, they're putting the feelers out through us first.

Please note that they're looking for a Graphic DESIGNER, not a Graphic ARTIST, so they're after someone who can design (catalogues, fliers, layouts, resizing, etc) rather than draw/paint, though I'm sure they won't say no to someone who can do both.

Comment here if you're interested or if you know anyone who might be. :)

I have no training, but I like doing that sort of stuff, and I *think* I'm good at it. o.o;;

No clue if that counts for shit though! =P

They're probably after someone with either qualifications or industry experience, but there's no harm in giving it a shot - if you've got a graphic design portfolio and a resume, let me know and I'll give you an email address to send them to. :)

I only have a few pieces that are anywhere near recent. I'll give it a pass, but I might work on getting together a mini portfolio over the next 6 months so that if something comes up, I have some stuff to actually well..show.

Also! I realized this morning I missed an SMS from Joe on like...Sunday? Mum's been here and I've been working so I totally spaced and never checked my phone. Sorry guys! =(

Aww, that's okay, I figured it was something like that! We thought you might've liked to come along to Alkira for the photography opportunities, but due to our disorganisation we only managed to get there around eleven, and the sun was so bright it wasn't good for photos at all. Dawn would have been heaps better!

It's always a good idea to have a portfolio handy, even if it just sits on your webspace for months on end... mine is a year out of date now, oops. But it's still handy to have that link to toss people when they ask to see your professional work (as opposed to your personal stuff) - I can send them over to www.taniawalker.com and know that there's nothing dodgy there. ;)

Would have loved to come along, but yeah, I didn't even see the SMS until today. =P If you go again, or you go exploring other places, throw me a line. I only have saturday's off (on weekends) normally, but I like adventures. =)

Full-time - I take it you're after something part-time to fit in with uni? :\

My supervisor Dave is going to check that for you - I think everything is still a bit up in the air right now! I'll let you know what he finds out. :)

Link me? Just so I can give it to them if they ask. Does it have design work in it? I should stress that the job advertised isn't the same job I've got, it's pure graphic design (but I know where you're at - money's money, and I've done plenty of pure design jobs in the past, it sure beats the hell out of most other jobs!)

I wish. I'd use it to visit Canada! Mmmm, snow and affordable housing. T_T

...right, but then there's the fuel cost for keeping your affordable house heated in the snow.

Ahh, the jaded expat speaks! I'm also not sure how well I'd cope with temperatures under 0 degrees... I've never even seen snow, dude! Still, Canada (and its many houses) looks so darn pretty...!

Damn it Taringa would be oh so convenient ;_; I'm afraid I can only draw really. I do have a diploma it was sort of half design and half illustration but that was 2yrs ago and I didn't get an opportunity to use what I learned so I've forgotten a lot. I'm a very willing learner though! I don't really have much of a portfolio either and none of it is design, they're all mainly character pictures so unless your boss is into furre art ._. *sighs and goes to work on commissions*

They're definitely looking for a designer rather than an artist... a 'mac monkey' if you will. If drawing is your thing you'd probably find that particular job pretty boring...

*headdesks* I want an opportunity to fall in my lap goddamnit! :P In all honesty I really really love to draw and to be an illustrator is my goal but I don't mind doing other things on the way there, after all graphic designer > dispatch clerk ;D I probably don't have anywhere near the experience that is required though. Hope you find someone!
tania From: tania Date: June 19th, 2008 06:06 am (UTC) (Link)
I've found that opportunities never really fall into your lap unless you're prepared for them (and/or actively seeking them out.) In other words, keep an up-to-date portfolio online and be ready to apply, for those ocassions when a good opportunity arises - like this one! If you've got enough design pieces around to put together a portfolio, you should do so, and have it ready and waiting. :) If not, put together some pieces - fake fliers, business cards, etc, just to show what you can do - and create a portfolio from those so you've got it handy for future opportunities.

*nods* It is good advice, advice my parents have also given me, what is holding me back from achieving what I want is a lack of motivation. I know I can do it, I think about doing it but it's like I can't get out of my own way. It's not even laziness either because I'm right here, now, typing on the thing I need to use to make said portfolio. It's like I'm afraid or something and I can't will myself to open Illustrator and just do eeeet. D:
tania From: tania Date: June 19th, 2008 09:31 pm (UTC) (Link)
I don't really have any good advice for you - I've struggled with procrastination too, but when it counts I've always been able to pull myself together and just start.

I guess that's the best advice. Don't scare yourself with thinking about what a big project is ahead of you - just grab a corner of it (one image) and start working. When that's finished, do another, and another. You need to be able to motivate yourself to work in art and design, it's an industry full of deadlines and solo work.

LOL I've done all of those things and have a portfolio.

Ok, I have a small layout cheat book and I tend to google most of my problems.

*sigh* why did I do my degree again?
tania From: tania Date: June 19th, 2008 09:32 pm (UTC) (Link)
*grin* Because employers place a large amount of value on that piece of paper. I've often asked myself why I haven't gone back to get a degree... at this point my experience outweighs the value of that piece of paper (if it costs me three years of further work experience) but it's still mildly frustrating when I see ads for jobs I know I could do in my sleep that have 'university degree' under the criteria.
