Oh my god - Suffering From Elation
A Survivor's Tale
Oh my god
It just hit me that I live in a house containing SEVEN PEOPLE and THREE CATS.

The fact that any of us are sane (I'm not sure all of us are, actually) is a miracle. Even more miraculous is the fact that, well... I love it!

Working late today because I stayed in bed for a cuddle this morning. Having the ability to choose to do so is one of the reasons I love this job, despite the hell it's been inflicting on my neck.

Also, today's free food shipment included soft-cookies, salted mixed nuts, seedless green grapes and crisps. Whilst I'm not actually allowing myself to eat ALL that stuff, I love that it's there if I ever want to!

I really...really...don't know how you do it. Apparently I can't even hold onto one roommate without wanting to kill them much less seven! But I bet you don't loan them substantial amounts of money either XD That usually helps.

Urgh, one of my flatmates loaned me a substantial amount of money when I was down and out. I was and am incredibly grateful, but with the job disturbance recently it's taken me longer than I'd planned to get into a position where I can pay it back. Luckily he's patient and comfortably off so my slowness is not a big deal, but it has been a good lesson in why it is bad to lend/borrow money among friends - no matter how well it is handled on both ends it can be awkward.

As for how we all live together... practice helps. And finding the right people. Being able to keep ourselves each from getting upset if a disagreement arises. Making absolutely sure that different people run different aspects of the household so that no one person controls everything, that's a big one - when we first moved in here I took responsibility for organising everythihg, which was bad from the perspective that others had less control, and also bad from the perspective that I felt like I was the only one worrying about the day-to-day running of the place, which felt overwhelming and unmanageable.

We've fallen into a pattern that works for us all now - rosters for the dishes and bathrooms, respect and grace when it comes to taking turns using the washing machine and dryer... but it took us a year to get this streamlined.

What's helped me most - and this will help you too - is that whenever current flatmates get on my nerves, I remind myself of just how much worse one or two former flatmates I've had were... and then I feel incredibly lucky!

I never bring snacks anymore, that's for sure. I was bad today and had cookie! Which reminds me... you know when you sent Joe that message about how "there's nothing better first thing in the morning than a great big xxxx"? When he got that we'd just walked out of a lolly shop with a GIANT bag of lollies. If either of us had credit we would have been totally cruel and sent you a photo. ;)
