The eee and the interiew.
This was written a few hours ago at UQ St Lucia. :)

Huh, no wireless network on the St Lucia campus? Who knew?

Regardless, a belated hello to LJ-land. I'm writing this from my new ASUS eee-PC, the mini-mini-laptop of awesome. Weighing approximately 900 grams (around 2 pounds) it is the most me-sized piece of hardware I have ever owned. The small keyboard is slowly becoming more natural to use. The small price tag was a BIG surprise. I bought this for myself as a motivator to write: I have now promised myself a complete first draft of my novel by the end of 2008.

Haha, some random guy just came over to ask me about this computer. It sure gets a lot of attention!

So I'm at St Lucia in this little coffee shop adjoining the library, waiting to meet Joe for lunch when his class comes out. I'm in the area thanks to the job interview I just had in Taringa. The interview went really well and the work environment sounds AMAZING, but I don't want to jinx it by saying more at this point. I think I made a good impression – we were all making jokes by the end and Myron, the art director, kept speaking in a kind of 'when' rather than 'if' manner, though perhaps that was just wishful hearing on my part. They have two more interviews to conduct over the next couple of days and will notify all applicants of the final decision by Friday.

Oh yeah, and all their artists use dual-monitor setups with 90% Photoshop use, 10% Illustrator use, and large Wacom Intuos graphics tablets. This is my IDEAL working setup. Also they have free fruit weekly for all employees, in the name of keeping us healthy. There are flexible start/finish times, flexible incentives for employees, and the pay... oh god, the pay... like I said, I don't want to jinx it so I'll shut up now.

The laptop just got another comment from a total stranger, this time one of the waiters. Awesome.

I'm a couple of LJ entries behind – Joe and Hammond covered the National Park Adventure here and here respectively but I wanted to do a photo-post of my own for completion's sake. Also, sooner or later there'll be a locked TMI post from me. There's just so much good stuff happening at the moment I can't keep up. It's funny how my life works like this: when things are bad, everything is bad; when things are good more and more goodness just rains down like manna from heaven until I feel as though I'm leading a charmed life. Maybe this is a gift (or curse) I'm under... another proviso on the 'may I live an interesting life' contract I signed with the universe at age twelve.

I have been thinking of getting an eee for ages! You must tell me specifications; disk space, Windows or Linux, colour etc etc :P Any problems so far?

Good luck for your perfect job.

Disk space - 4 gig, though the pre-installed OS (a custom Linux tabbed dealie, though you can optionally install XP) and software (all AWESOME!) takes up 3 gig of that. There's a mem card slot and I believe you can currently get 8 gig in SD mem cards. I'm holding off on that because I really only want to use this thing for writing and browsing the internets, which requires very little space. :)

The colour is pearl white; right now only black and white are available here. I think further colours are coming sometime this year. IMO the white looks more expensive than the black, probably only because white is a more 'trendy' colour right now.

No problems so far whatsoever. Works GREAT! The small keyboard takes getting used to, and the shift key is in a difficult position, but these issues are more than made up for by all the amazing benefits of this laptop. Not least of these is that it's the first computer I would TRULY call a 'portable' - you don't have to rearrange your life, or your bag, to carry it around with you. :) Highly recommended, but only for text-based / student stuff, I would say.

Thanks :) I may go back to university if only to justify getting one ;)

Hon, I think you forgot to add links to your sentence about the National Park Adventure FYI.

It's hard for me to justify an Eee as a toy, (I already have a laptop as my primary computer) but I really want one. :D

"Huh, no wireless network on the St Lucia campus?"

I'm pretty sure there is? There's always some wanker chatting on MSN in the row in front of me in most of my classes, maybe the coffee shop is just a dead zone or something?

UQ St Lucia has lots of wireless internet, god knows I wasted most of first year at that same coffee shop. I think this year they added some secure jiggery pokery to get on to the wireless there. I don't go there any more so I can't help you out. Plus, you'd need a UQ username and password to get on the internet anyways.

Turns out I was Doing It Wrong and there is in fact more than one wireless network... none unsecured though, dangit. I guess you'd be mad to have an unsecured connection in a place filled with thousands of uni students. ;)

Yeah, they changed it at the start of the year, it sucks. But, if you plan on wirelessing it up at uq a lot, you should get Joe's student ID/password so that you can log onto the network. We students get 200mb/month for freeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Been thinking about getting an eee as well after reading Glen Reynold's reviews of it. and I have seen 8 and 16 Gig SD cards for sale at Fry's Electronics so there are storage options abouve 2Gig. (Hell even my current phone has a 4 Gig SD card in it. It's a retty powerfull machine and small enough to take with me on route in the car, and with L.A. being blanketed with wireles, I could surf on Standby :-)

Hmm might you be manic Depressive?

I considered that, but I think it's simpler than that: a lot of the positive movement in my life comes from determination and drive, which is linked to a positive attitude from me. If something seriously bad happens and I start feeling too down I lose some of my 'oomph' and as a result, stop generating so many good opportunities and fun moments.

My default setting is 'happy' - the last few months were definitely an anomaly. Fortunately I learned a lot from the experience, so it wasn't wasted.

Re the eee: They're so inexpensive and I love mine so far - if you can spare the money I'd recommend it. :) 16 gig cards are still hard to come by out here and the ones I've seen are very expensive, but that's no worry for me, as with writing alone it'll take me forever just to fill up one gig.

Oh sweet... that work setup sounds fantastic. Here's to hoping you get it, and that it's really as cool as it sounds! :D
